Kidnapped Guyanese woman released

Police in Guyana yesterday confirmed that a 28-year-old administrative assistant, who had been kidnapped four days earlier, had been released.

However, neither the police nor the relatives of Gail Perreira would say whether the 10 million Guyanese dollar ransom had been paid to secure her release.

Perreira, who was released unhurt, was snatched last Thursday night as she reached her East Bank Demerara home.

Police were told that gunmen held up the taxi and forced the driver to lie on the ground before driving off with the vehicle that was later found abandoned.

The abductors had previously demanded a 20 million Guyanese dollar ransom, but reduced their demands informing the relatives that they should not call the police.
