Speedier justice promised in T&T
Trinidad and Tobago's Justice Minister Herbert Volney says the government plans to take steps to ensure speedier trials to reduce the backlog of criminal cases.
The Trinidad Guardian newspaper quotes the minister as saying a top government priority in the New Year will be the construction of at least four new high courts along the country's east/west corridor.
The plans are part of an initiative to effectively tackle violent crimes.
Volney says the drive will result in speedier justice.
He says under the programme current cases would be dealt with within a year from the time when the offender is charged while the older matters would continue to be tried at the same time.
The minister expects the four new court buildings to be up and running by 2015.
