Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg has defended the city’s efforts to clear snow amid frustration by some residents over the time it is taking to unclog streets days after a massive holiday blizzard.

Bloomberg has insisted that workers have been able to do a good job despite the bad weather.

Many New Yorkers are still struggling to get to work or travel to local hospitals as they wait for snow plows to reach their streets in many parts of New York City's outer districts.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said she would convene emergency oversight hearings on January 10 to examine the city's response to the storm.

Head of New York's sanitation workers' union blamed both harsh winds and a city-wide budget cuts as reasons for the slow response.
