Opposition leader concerned about chairman appointment

Antigua and Barbuda’s Opposition Leader, Lester Bird, has described as illegal the decision to appoint retired educator Juno Samuel to replace Sir Gerald Watt as chairman of the Electoral Commission.

Bird has accused Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack and Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of knowingly acting in contravention of the laws of Antigua and Barbuda.

Bird says the opposition should have been consulted on the matter in keeping with the country’s Representation of the People Act.

However, Bird said that at no time, was he consulted by the prime minister concerning the appointment of Juno Samuel as Chairman of the Commission.
