Australia take lead in Supreme Ventures series

Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls suffered a 63-51 defeat to World Number One Australia in the opening game of their Supreme Ventures Sunshine three-game netball series at the National Indoor Sports Complex last night.



On their way to victory, the Australians won the first quarter 15-12, the second quarter 32-25 and the third quarter 48-37.



Sharelle McMahon led the scoring for the visitors with 32 goals from 38 attempts. She received good support from Natalie Medhurst, 15 goals from 22 attempts and Catherine Scott, 16 goals from 22 attempts.



For Jamaica, Romelda Aikens had 22 from 28 attempts, captain Simone Forbes 20 from 22 and young Jhanelle Fowler 9 from 9.



Despite a 12-point defeat, Jamaica’s coach Connie Francis said the Sunshine Girls put up a good fight.



Australia’s coach Norma Plummer was very pleased with the performance from the team.



The series, which both sides are using as part of their preparations for this year’s World Championships in July in Singapore, continues with matches tomorrow and Sunday at the same venue.
