A man set himself on fire outside the parliament building in the Egyptian capital, Cairo today.
He is said to have shouted anti-government slogans before pouring fuel on his clothes and setting himself on fire.
Officials say policemen nearby managed to put out the flames, and the man is now in stable condition in hospital.
The action echoes that of a 26-year-old Tunisian whose fiery suicide sparked a wave of protest in the country that brought down the government.
Meanwhile, Tunisia has formed a national unity government days after a popular revolt ousted the president.
The government will be led by incumbent Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi, and aims to prepare Tunisia for elections.
