Guyana government outlines 2011 budget

The Guyana government has put forward a budget of GUY$161.4 billion (US$7.9 billion) for the new financial year.
The budget contains provisions for a series of tax-relief measures for individuals and businesses, as well as increases in pensions and public assistance.
In outlining the budget in the National Assembly yesterday Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh said people earning $40,000 per month or less would no longer have to pay income tax.
The relief will take effect on February 1.
The finance minister announced that public assistance has been increased from $4,900 per month to $5,500.
Pension payment has also been hiked to $7,500 from $900.
