Jamaica defeated English club Somerset by 61 runs in their rain-affected Group ‘A’ contest of the Caribbean 20/20 Championship at Kensington Oval in Barbados last night.

With the victory, Jamaica have climbed top of the table courtesy of net run rate and are strongly poised to qualify Saturday’s semi-finals.

The Jamaicans are on eight points, the same as Windward Islands and reigning champions Guyana, who are in danger of missing the semi-finals as they have completed their schedule.

The Jamaica, Somerset match was reduced to six overs per side following rain and Jamaica, sent in to bat, piled up 85 for one. Marlon Samuels top scored for Jamaica with an undefeated 45 from 21 deliveries and Danza Hyatt got 21 from nine balls.

Needing 86 runs for victory, Somerset were reduced to 24 for eight against the bowling of Nikita Miller two for four from one over and Krishmar Santokie two for 4 from two overs.

Jerome Taylor, Dave Bernard Junior and Andre Russell chipped in with a wicket each.

Jamaica will play their final preliminary round match against Windward Islands tomorrow night at 8 p.m.

Guyana received a major setback when they lost by two runs to Windward Islands in the second game last night.

Two Group ‘B’ games are scheduled for today at the same venue. Those games are Hampshire Royals against Trinidad and Tobago at 4 p.m. and Canada playing Barbados at 8 p.m.
