No interference in Haitian parliament

The Organisation of American States (OAS) said it has no intention of interfering in the political situation in Haiti that has so far resulted in the parliament rejecting at least two nominees for the post of Prime Minister.

The Haitian parliament is still to vote on the selection of Michele Pierre-Louis.

Haitian lawmakers have already rejected President Rene Preval\'s earlier nominees, Eriq Pierre and Robert Manuel, to replace Jacques Eduoard Alexis, who was dismissed in April at the height of food riots that resulted in seven deaths.

OAS Secretary General, Jose Insulza, told reporters in Antigua that the organisation had no intention of seeking to usurp the constitution of the French-speaking CARICOM country that stipulates that the parliament elects the prime minister.

Mr. Insulza is attending the 29th summit of CARICOM Heads of Government.

The OAS delegation held discussions with CARICOM leaders meeting for their annual summit.

Mr. Insulza said the deliberations centered on a number of issues including governance, security and agriculture, particularly the efforts to deal with the food crisis facing the region.
