RJR Sportsman, Sportswoman of the Year awards tonight
The 2010 RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards ceremony will take place tonight at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, with the function scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
While World Indoor 60-metre champion Veronica Campbell-Brown looks a cinch for the Sportswoman-of-the-Year award, there are several strong claims for the Sportsman-of-the-Year award.
Among those with strong claims for the men’s award are World 100 and 200-metre record-holder Usain Bolt, Commonwealth Games 100-metre gold medallist Lerone Clarke and West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle.
However, Gayle is the favourite based on his career-best 333 on the second day of the opening Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka on November 16 at Galle International Stadium.
Gayle's innings was the first triple-century by a West Indies player away from home, the highest by any player in Tests between the two teams, and the first triple hundred at the venue.
The other men’s nominees are Jermaine Gonzales, who set a new national record in the 400 metres, Nesta Carter, Dorian Scott, Lansford Spence and Asafa Powell, all track and field athletes, skier Errol Kerr and cricketer Brendan Nash.
The other female nominees are track and field athletes Sheree Francis; Trecia-Kaye Smith, Nickeisha Wilson and Kaliese Spencer along with cricketer Stafanie Taylor and swimmer Alia Atkinson.
