The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, says Haiti must have credible elections to maintain support from Washington and the rest of the international community.

She told the UN Security Council that the US welcomes the recommendations by the Organisation of American States (OAS), including a call for runoff elections in Haiti.

The OAS report advises that government-backed candidate Jude Celestin be dropped from the runoff.

Ambassador Rice told the council that the situation has been further complicated with the return of former dictator Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier.
