Decrease in sexual violence in Haiti

The United Nations is reporting that sexual violence in Haiti's earthquake camps has decreased with the implementation of security measures.

According to the spokesperson for the UN mission in Haiti, Sylvie van den Wildenberg the risk of rape for women in the camps had increased dramatically.

However, she says the UN has implemented a strategy since August 2010 that included an increase in patrols by peacekeepers and the presence of gender focal points in camps identified as high risk.

She says these have resulted in a decrease in sexual violence.
