The ruling party in Haiti has indicated that its candidate in the presidential election could withdraw from the race in an effort to ease tensions.
The party says it believes that this is the best decision to take given the circumstances.
Haiti’s November 28 presidential and legislative elections have been thrown into confusion amid allegations of voter fraud, intimidation and other irregularities.
The United Nations and western donors have put intense pressure on outgoing President Rene Preval and electoral authorities to accept the Organisation of American States’ (OAS) report challenging preliminary results from the elections that had put the ruling party’s candidate in the run-off.
