Minister dismisses corruption allegations
The Turks and Caicos Chief Minister, Michael Misick, is dismissing a report by British lawmakers which called for the United Kingdom government to investigate corruption in the Caribbean dependency.
Mr. Misick said the report by the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee presents an unbalanced view of his government.
He said the opposition People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) might have influenced the report.
The British committee said it heard allegations of state land being sold off for personal gain, and bribe-taking among ministers.
The MPs said they have received more than 50 letters from residents complaining of rampant corruption within the islands\' government, political interference with the judiciary and the suppression of freedom of speech.
When questioned by the committee Mr. Misick reportedly denied all the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated.
