St. Lucia’s Minister for Public Utilities Guy Joseph has vowed to use his influence to protect consumers from an increase in electricity rates in light of rising oil prices on the global market.
The St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited has indicated that it would be seeking to adjust its rates upwards in response to the increase in the prices of oil.
Speaking against the backdrop of renewed tensions in the Middle East caused by the crisis in Egypt, which is also expected to affect oil prices, the Minister said St. Lucia is clearly vulnerable to what is taking place outside the region.
Joseph said while this is a reality the right and interest of customers should be protected.
