Reactions to Mubarak resignation

World leaders have been reacting to the resignation of Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak.



Mubarak stepped down today following 18 days of protests calling for his resignation.



According to US president Barak Obama, this is a significant day for the Egyptian people and he says efforts must now be made to ensure that the changes are irreversible.



The secretary-general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, a former Egyptian foreign minister, says events in Egypt present an opportunity to build a national consensus.



Meanwhile, Iran described the recent events as a great victory.



A senior Israeli official expressed the hope that Mubarak's departure would bring no change to its peaceful relations with Cairo.



European Union leaders have reacted positively to the news of Mubarak's resignation.



Foreign policy chief Baroness Ashton says the EU respects the decision.
