Trinidad’s Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs has warned against vigilante justice in the twin island state. This, after a man used his car to run over a bandit that had robbed a home in Barrackpore.

Gibbs said he is concerned at the recent events where community residents have taken action against persons they have identified as a criminal threat in their communities.

He cautioned residents against excessive use of force against persons caught perpetrating criminal acts, noting that when residents take the law into their own hands the situation can quickly turn into a homicide.

He said, instead of vigilante justice, residents should contact the police to avoid the escalation of any situation. Police confirmed that the suspected robber later died while the man, who drove his car over the suspected bandit, was in custody. The second suspect who was beaten by the residents has been hospitalised under police guard.
