T&T to debate hanging bill

The House of Representatives in Trinidad and Tobago is scheduled to begin debate today on a bill which could pave the way for an early resumption of hangings of convicted killers.

The bill aims to relax a taxing five-year schedule set by the British Privy Council to execute after sentencing.

Under the bill, the country's president will set down the time frame for appeals.

If the limit is exceeded, then local authorities can decide whether the execution should take place or the sentence commuted.
