US President Barack Obama has condemned the violent crackdown by the Libyan authorities on peaceful protesters.

Obama said the US was drawing up a range of options for action in consultation with its allies.

He added that the Libyan government would be held accountable for its actions.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has come under pressure to resign, but he has refused.

There have been violent clashes as a result.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi is battling to keep control of western Libya, including the capital, Tripoli as opposition protesters have taken control of the eastern end of the country.
