Authorities across the United States have arrested 678 people with alleged ties to Mexican drug trafficking organisations in a three-month operation led by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The US agency has announced that among those caught up in the sweep were 322 people with violent criminal histories.

It also says those arrested are linked to 133 gangs in 24 countries.

The operation targeted transnational gangs, including large numbers of foreigners involved in human smuggling, identity theft, fraud, weapons trafficking and drugs.
