Regional educator back-tracks on stance to distribute condoms in school
Regional educator and coordinator in the North America Caribbean region for Education International, Virginia Albert-Poyotte has back-tracked on a position to distribute condoms in schools.
Following a teachers’ workshop in St. Lucia last month, Mrs. Albert-Poyotte had said that the issue must be tackled because advocating that students exercise safe sex or abstinence could not be considered a guarantee against the spread of HIV/ AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections among teens.
But in an interview published in the Nation Newspaper in Barbados today, Mrs. Albert-Poyotte says she is against the distribution of condoms in schools. She says students should focus on their studies and their future and delay sexual activity until they are mature.
However, Mrs. Albert Poyotte maintains that not all young people will abstain from sexual activity.
