The British governor in the Turks and Caicos Islands says there will be no elections this year, and that instead of rescinding public sector pay cuts, there may even be public sector job cuts.
Governor Gordon Wetherell told BBC Caribbean that he is working to a UK government timeline which aims to hold elections by next year.
The British governor has been responding to protests against direct British rule.
Last week, protestors caused significant disruption as they demanded elections this year and a roll back of the hike in utility bills.
Governor Wetherall says despite the territory receiving a $260 million loan there is still a need to rein in spending and trim the public sector to put the territory back on a better financial footing.
