Department criticises immigration failures

The United Kingdom government has announced that migrants entering the UK from outside the European Union are to be banned from working as hairdressers, senior care workers and chefs in fast food outlets.

Britain's audit department has criticised the authorities for failing to do enough to catch foreigners who overstay their visas.

The agency says more than 180,000 migrants who should have left the country over the past two years might have remained in the UK illegally.

The ban forms part of efforts by the Government to meet its pledge to bring net migration down from around 200,000 to tens of thousands by 2015.
