British reggae singer Smiley Culture is said to have died from self-inflicted wounds during a drug raid by the police at his London home.

The musician, who became famous in the 1980s, had appeared before magistrates last September on a charge of conspiracy to supply cocaine.

Smiley's hits included Police Officer, which expressed how many black people felt they were being treated unfairly by the police, and Cockney Translation.

That song was seen as a Londoner's guide to Jamaican dialect.

The UK Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating Smiley's death.
