The government of Barbados will stop issuing work permits to non-nationals in cases where there is no enforcement of a requirement to train a local for the job.

Leader of Public Business in the Senate, Maxine McClean, gave the warning on Wednesday as she introduced the Immigration Amendment and Validation Bill 2008 in the Upper House.

McClean, who is also a Minister in the Prime Minister\'s Office, said there had been a requirement of training Barbadians to assume jobs for which work permits were offered.

She said this was especially so for contracts running three years and over.

McClean said since taking up her post she has been hearing from immigration officials that this requirement and others were no longer being enforced.
