The Trinidad and Tobago Parliament has approved big increases in the money given to parliamentarians to run their constituencies.

According to a report in the Sunday Express, the monthly allocation for an elected parliamentarian has gone from $22,100 to $55,800.

The newspaper said the increases were confirmed in May in a letter sent to the Clerk of the House.

Opposition Chief Whip, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, said the increased allowances are to help the country’s 41 MPs improve the quality of the representation they provide.
