Champs athletes represent in CARIFTA squad

Jazeel Murphy of Bridgeport High, Calabar’s Travis Smikle and Edwin Allen’s outstanding sprinter Christania Williams have been included in Jamaica’s 70-member squad for the 40th CARIFTA Games later this month.



The CARIFTA Games will be hosted in Jamaica at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay from April 22 to 25.



Murphy recovered from injury earlier in the season to win the Class One 100-metre sprint at the recently concluded ISSA/Grace Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.



Smikle set a national junior and event record of 66.88 metres in the Boys Class 1 discus throw.



Williams, who was ineligible to compete at this year’s Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, made the squad based on her outstanding performance at the CARIFTA Trials.



She survived a false start to clock a brilliant 11.39 seconds in winning the Under-20 girls’ 100 metres.



The squad also included, Kemar Bailey Cole, formerly of Old Harbour High, along with Wolmer’s Girls’ Shawna Helps and Holmwood’s Lisa Buchanan, who were double winners at Girls’ and Boys’ Athletics Championships.
