Guyana’s human rights association and opposition political parties are calling for an immediate independent inquiry into the death of a prisoner.

Edwin Niles is reported to have died after he was allegedly tortured by the country’s security forces.

A post mortem revealed that the prisoner died from a blood clot in the lungs, due to burns on his back and a fractured left arm.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, said while the matter is being investigated the police have still not been able to establish the circumstances leading to the prisoner’s death.
