St. Kitts-Nevis: Campaigning for assembly limits
President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Bar Association, Charles Wilkin is advocating for a limit of four terms for elected representatives in the National Assembly.
The introduction of term limits would require an amendment to the Constitution.
According to Wilkin, a vote of two thirds, that is eight elected representatives of the 11 in the National Assembly, could bring about the changes.
He said the twin-island Federation is meant to be a constitutional democracy, with citizens electing their parliamentary representatives by free and fair elections.
Wilkin said term limits would address the issue of imbalance in the system and would prevent persons in power from using that power to remain in office indefinitely.
He said it would also make room for fresh candidates and encourage participation in the process.
