Unions wants discussion on surveillance cameras

The National Union of Public Workers in Barbados has demanded a full discussion with the government over plans to install surveillance cameras at all ports of entry, particularly at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

General secretary Dennis Clarke, whose trade union represents immigration and customs officers, says while his group is not opposed to the plans, thorough discussion must first take place.

The move is being considered following allegations by Jamaican Shanique Myrie that she was abused by immigration personnel at the airport.

But the trade unionist says cameras are already in place at the airport and although they were not officially put into operation, they have been used.

Clarke wants a Memorandum of Understanding to be put in place to determine where the cameras should be installed.

He said, customs officers need to be protected given their sensitive duties and notes that some ports of entry were extremely sterile and should not be treated lightly.
