Powell win 100 metres in Sweden

Asafa Powell capitalised on Usain Bolt’s weak start and edged the world-record holder by 100th

of a second in the men’s 100 metres at the DN Galan track and field meeting in Stockholm, Sweden yesterday.



Powell, the former world-record holder, won the highly anticipated rematch in 9.88 seconds. Bolt, who was slow out of the blocks, nearly caught his fellow Jamaican at the finish line. He clocked 9.89 seconds.



In the women’s equivalent, Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser, 11.20, was fourth to American winner Lauryn Williams, who won in 11.10. Sherone Simpson finished seventh in 11.25.



Sheri-Ann Brooks, 11.19, was third in race two of the women’s 100 metres.



There were two other second place finishes for Jamaica at the meet. Novlene Williams clocked 50.85 for second in the women’s 400 metres won by American Sanya Richards in 50.38.



Jamaican Shericka Williams, 51.17, was fourth and national champion Rosemarie White finished eighth in 52.09.



Dorian Scott, 20.37 metres, was second in the men’s shot put. American Adam Nelson won at 20.75 metres.



In the men’s 400 metres, Jamaican Ricardo Chambers, 44.84, was third to American winner Jeremy Wariner, who won in 44.29.



In-form Jamaican hurdler Delloreen Ennis-London, 12.70, finished second in race one of the women’s 100-metre hurdles. American Lolo Jones won in 12.64.
