The United Nations said it would be launching a project to help more than 5,000 small farmers in Guyana diversify their crops in a bid to make them more competitive on the international market.
The UN International Fund for Agricultural Development is providing nearly $7 million for the project.
The UN said it should help small farmers find alternative sources of income in non-traditional agricultural products such as root crops, vegetables, tropical fruits and spices.
Markets for Guyana\'s traditional exports like sugar and rice, have reportedly declined in recent years.
