The 21-year-old grandson of a Bermuda cabinet minister has been jailed for nine months after he admitted to conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

K’Wonde Lathan repeatedly called and texted his cousin in a bid to get her to drop assault charges against alleged gang member.

The gang member, who has been jailed for two years, was arrested for pushing the woman and causing her to fall down the stairs at a bar.

Prosecutors told Magistrates' Court that through telephone calls the men sought to make the woman fearful for her life in an effort to get her to drop the charges.

Lathan, whose grandmother is Neletha Butterfield, the Public Information Minister, was handed a two-year probation order in addition to the prison sentence.

On release from prison, he will have to abide by a curfew for three months, refrain from using illicit drugs and submit to random drug testing.
