Jamaica’s Chris Gayle has stepped down as captain of the West Indies cricket team.

Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board, Dr Donald Peters confirmed Gayle’s resignation yesterday.

In 15 Tests and One-Day Internationals since he took charge in November last year, Gayle has led the West Indies to five wins but lost nine matches.

Seven of those nine losses came against world champion Australia in May and early June.

In Gayle’s last game as captain in June, the West Indies suffered a 5-0 whitewash in the One Day Internationals against Australia, after losing the Test series 2-0.
