Federer, Djokovic ease into second round

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were both in dominant mood as they swept into the second round at Wimbledon yesterday.



Federer was not at his best as he began his quest for a seventh men's title but was still far too strong for Kazakhstan debutant Mikhail Kukushkin.



The 29-year-old Swiss triumphed 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour 42 minutes.



Djokovic, 24, followed Federer on to Centre Court and demolished France's Jeremy Chardy, dropping just six games in a one-sided 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 win.



Other men’s winners were Andy Roddick, Juan Martin Del Potro, Andy Murray, Gilles Simon, Guillermo Garcia Lopez and Ivo Karlovic.



In the women’s draw, defending champion Serena Williams survived a hard-fought first-round encounter with Aravane Rezai to advance to the second round with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory.



Number One seed Caroline Wozniacki conceded only three games on the way to a commanding 6-2 6-1 victory over Arantxa Parra Santonja.



Eighth seed Petra Kvitova, 11th seed Andrea Petkovic and 14th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also progressed.



However, 15th seed Jelena Jankovic suffered a first-round exit after a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 defeat by Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
