Public health officials in St Lucia have warned of what they say are disturbing levels of dengue fever and leptospirosis cases on the island.
The department of health said so far this year there have been 169 reported cases of dengue fever compared to 95 cases in 2010 and only 18 in 2009.
The department said it will be launching a public education and clean-up campaign to rid the island of disease-carrying mosquitoes and rats.
It said the campaign will target eight large communities and will include fogging, community clean-ups, education campaigns and house-to-house inspections.
