Arrest warrant issued for former Afghan central bank governor

An arrest warrant has been issued for former governor of Afghanistan’s central bank, Abdul Qadeer Fitrat.

According to BBC reports, he is being investigated in connection with massive fraud at the Bank and the printing of unauthorised amounts of currency.

It emerged earlier that Mr. Fitrat had fled to the United States after saying his life was in danger for exposing fraud.

He says the Afghan government had hindered his attempts to investigate corruption.

But Afghan government officials indicate that they would ask the US embassy and Interpol for help in securing Mr Fitrat's arrest.

It’s not clear how the former bank chief will be returned to Afghanistan as the US does not have an extradition treaty with Afghanistan and Mr. Fitrat says he has no plans to return.
