Police in Guatemala have arrested mayoral candidate Luis Fernando Marroquin, who is alleged to have ordered hits on two of his contenders for the city of San Jose Pinula.
The plot also involved Marroquin’s faked assassination attempt on himself to conceal involvement.
He and two accomplices are to be tried for murder, illicit association and faking a crime.
Authorities linked two firearms to all three of the incidents.
The story of the so-called Marroquin attack began to sound doubtful when he stated that he was saved by a bulletproof vest, although at least three bullets had pierced the driver’s seat of his vehicle.
