Nigerian man survives 2 days under rubble
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian rescuers say a man has been found alive in the rubble of a four-story building more than two days after it collapsed in the commercial capital of Africa's most populous nation, killing 11 people.
National Emergency Management Agency official Tunde Adebiyi said the survivor was admitted to a Lagos hospital's intensive care unit Friday afternoon. He called it "a miracle."
He said 37 people were rescued from the building, which collapsed Tuesday night in the middle of Lagos' busy Idumota market. Five of them are in intensive care.
The government demolished three neighboring buildings to make room for excavators to free people buried under the rubble.
Millions of people live in substandard housing because of the high demand for accommodation in Lagos, a city of some 14 million.
