Smikle, Gordon win Pan Am gold for Jamaica

Traves Smikle mined Jamaica’s first gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships in Miramar, Florida by winning the men’s discus on yesterday’s opening day.



Smikle won very easily with a meet record throw of 66.58 metres. His teammate Fedrick Dacres took the bronze medal by registering 57.24 metres.



Chris-Ann Gordon won a second gold medal for Jamaica with victory in the women’s 400 metres in 52.62metres.



Overseas-based Daina Levy won Jamaica’s first medal at the Championship. Levy took the silver medal in the women’s hammer throw with 55.97 metres. American Shelby Ashe won the gold medal with a throw of 59.25 metres.



Twelve finals are scheduled for today’s second day.
