Badminton: Junior Championships Round Up

Jamaican Samuel Ricketts ticked off two victories on yesterday’s opening day of singles action at the Ocean Spray Wata Junior Badminton Championships at the National Indoors Sports Centre in Kingston.



Ricketts recorded the first victory for Jamaica on the day by beating Ivan Moralez of Puerto Rico 21-18, 21-14 in the Boys’ 17 and Under section.



He returned in the evening session to stop Jason Ramjass of Trinidad and Tobago 21-10, 21-15.



Dennis Coke and Tiana Daley were also among the winners for Jamaica on the opening day.



Coke had an easy 21-10, 21-10 win over Guyanese Christopher Persaud in the Boys’ 19 and Under. However, he lost to Heymard Humblers of Guyana 21-16, 21-13 in his second match.



Daley scored a 21-16, 22-10 victory over Mexican Michelle Alderete in the Girls’ 13 and Under section.



Top local junior player Mikaylia Haldane lost 21-14, 21-14 to Nikte Sotomayor of Guatemala in the Girls’ 19 and Under section.



In the Boys’ 15 and Under section, Jamaica’s Sean Wilson easily got by Guyanese Jamel Ramsook 21-love, 21-7. However, the other Jamaicans – Matthew Lee, Shaquille Palmer, Erin Bailey and Dre’Neil Lyle lost their matches.



Other Jamaican singles winners on the opening day were Jermarey Gordon and Ramone Robinson in the Boys’ Under-19 section.
