The Dominican government says preliminary estimates of the damages caused after a river in the western community of Layou overflowed its banks and broke a dam has been put at just under US$7 million dollars.
The floods caused by heavy rains over the past few days also destroyed bridges, crops and several homes.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has declared the area a disaster zone.
Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmoore says this initial assessment takes into account the damage done to the roads in the area.
