Alastair Cook narrowly missed joining England's elite club of triple-centurions but nonetheless steered his team ever closer to the number one Test status at Edgbaston.
The opener defied a weary India attack in a career-best 294 to lead England to 710 for seven declared on today’s third day of the third N-Power Test.
Cook, who was 182 overnight, faced 545 balls and when he was dismissed off Ishant Sharma, the declaration came immediately.
Amit Mishra was the most successful bowler for India with three for 150, while Praveen Kumar had two for 98.
India promptly lost Virender Sehwag for a golden duck for the second time in the match as the visitors closed the day on 35 for one, 451 runs behind.
Gautam Gambhir, 14, and Rahul Dravid, 18, are the batsmen at the crease.
England lead the four-Test series 2-nil. They are seeking to clinch the series and replace India as the world’s number one side.
