Top Oxfam official in Haiti resigns

The Haitian director of the British-based charity, Oxfam Great Britain, Roland Van Hauwermeiren, has voluntarily resigned amid allegations staff misconduct.

Oxfam spokeswoman Ana Arendar said that Van Hauwermeiren felt he should step down because the accusations arose on his watch. She declined to say when he stepped down.

The British charity announced last week that it had suspended several staff members pending the outcome of an internal probe and while Arendar did not elaborate on the charges, she said the investigation is expected to conclude by next month.

Oxfam received US$100 million from donors after last year's earthquake in Haiti that killed an estimated 300,000 people and left more than a million others homeless.

The group is reported to have used the money to try to improve sanitation amid a cholera outbreak, which health officials say has killed almost 6,000 people since the first case was detected last October.
