Serena Williams through to semis

Serena Williams remains on course for a second title in the North American hard court season after battling through to the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto today.



Williams fought to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against left-handed Czech opponent Lucie Safarova.



The 13-time Grand Slam winner is two wins away from another trophy, in what is just her fourth tournament of 2011.



The win sets up a clash with fifth seed Victoria Azarenka.



The other semi-final will feature Sam Stosur and Agnieszka Radwanska.



Meanwhile, World number one Novak Djokovic moved into the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Gael Monfils of France today.



Djokovic needed only 73 minutes to record his 51st win in 52 matches this year as he seeks a ninth title of 2011.



In the last four he will play another Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat eighth seed Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-4.



Mardy Fish beat Stanislas Wawrinka and faces a semi-final with unseeded Janko Tipsarevic, who beat Tomas Berdych.
