Obama issues strong warning to Gadhafi
US President Barack Obama has issued a strongly worded statement calling for Lybian leader Moammar Gadhafi to step down.
Obama said the situation in Libya has reached a tipping point and that, Gadhafi, who he describes as a tyrant, is losing control of major enclaves such as the capital Tripoli.
Yesterday, Libyan rebels went into Tripoli amid little resistance as Gadhafi's defenders which saw his 42-year authoritarian rule quickly crumbled.
Euphoric fighters celebrated with residents of the capital in Green Square, the symbolic heart of the fading regime.
Opposition fighters captured Gadhafi’s son and one-time heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, who along with his father faces charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.
Gadhafi's whereabouts were unknown, although state TV broadcast his bitter pleas for Libyans to defend his regime.
