The Caribbean Regional Workshop on the Implementation of the Convention on Tobacco Control is expected to get underway in Kingston today.

Approximately 70 health officials from the Caribbean, the World Health Organisations (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) are expected to attend the four-day workshop.

The objective of the workshop is to increase national capacity among Caribbean countries for the successful implementation of the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

The workshop will focus on several issues including packaging and labeling of tobacco products, smoke free environments and protection from second hand smoke.

Price and tax measures to reduce demand as well as elimination of illicit trade in tobacco products will also be examined.
