Five-time champion Roger Federer powered through his opening match against Santiago Giraldo at the US Open today despite a surprising wobble early on.
Federer, 30, let a double-break lead slip from 5-1 but then showed flashes of his brilliant best as he defeated the Colombian 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.
Other men’s winners were Mardy Fish, Gael Monfils, Tomas Berdych
In the women’s draw, British teenager, Heather Watson gave former champion Maria Sharapova a scare before the Russian prevailed.
The 19-year-old Watson led 6-3, 5-5 at one stage but eventually went down 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a dramatic match at Flushing Meadows.
