Guyana's President breaks silence

Guyana’s President President Bharrat Jagdeo has broken his silence on allegations that western countries had denounced the appointment of former crime chief Henry Greene to the post of Police Commissioner.

The internet whistleblower, Wikileaks, in recently released cables, said that the United States had indicated to Guyana that it had been conducting investigations which showed that Greene was involved in illicit activities that would prove to be detrimental to Guyana if he were appointed.

Jagdeo has told reporters that the US officials approached him claiming to have information that Greene was the subject of investigation and thus should not be appointed.

He said that he subsequently requested more evidence but that after two weeks the officials returned claiming that the provision of such information was unauthorized.
