Guyana uncovers multiple registrations

The Guyana Elections Commission says it has uncovered multiple registrations during the Claims and Objections exercises as it prepares for general and regional elections later this year.

The Commission says the duplications were determined through the electronic cross-matching of the fingerprints on the national Register of Registrants.

However, the commission said every case of multiple registrations was investigated.

The Elections Commission said it found that some of the cases of multiple registrations were unintentional, while others were found to have been committed deliberately.

Meanwhile, the Commission said it is currently finalising and printing the Revised List of Electors following the conclusion of the Claims and Objections Exercise for the upcoming elections.

No date has yet been announced for the elections, but political observers say President Bharrat Jagdeo, who is barred by the Constitution from seeking a third consecutive term in office, will most likely announce a date in November.
